When I first came into the rooms of AA over 18 years ago, It was the tail end of what used to be, and can only speak for a large area of Long Island, NY, where we had steering committees. Steering Committees where old-timers in the group who didnt have an on-the-surface commitment, such as coffee maker, chairman, literature, secretary, etc. They were the voice that carried the message via experience, strength, and hope, to help the group stay focused on the principles and traditions in various areas. They would share their knowledge at a meeting, business meeting or sometimes one-on-one to let a person know why the traditions were so important, and if not followed, could harm or relapse a newcomers sobriety. The years of experience in AA of those who keep coming back is where the value is of what works in AA and what does not â€" all those years of seeing things proven over and over again. If all the old-timers have left and a group is in trouble, GSO would send a GSR to help restructure the group. Today there are many, many groups in my area where the old-timers have left. There are no steering committees. New members are taking commitments too soon, such as a person with under a year being a Group Representative and going out and drinking before they have two years sober because they got right into the politics of AA rather than personal recovery and had no foundation. Most people in this area do not know that a GSR would come out and help restructure a group. There arent many who are willing to lead a tradition meeting and not many who want to attend one. The membership of old-timers has declined more and more with the new thinking: I have my sobriety, I did all the work already, I did all my steps, I only need 1 or 2 meetings a week (sometimes you hear a month), I am fine, I dont need to go, I. The current personal conflict that I am experiencing right now is regarding my parents and having a part-time job. I decided to have a part-time job so that I could somehow support myself while I’m studying, something which could give me a spare money during my free time. For me, I can manage to work and study at the same time because I’m a dedicated person when it comes to academic matters. But the real problem is not with me, but with my parents. They are afraid that I might spend so much time with my part-time job and less time with my studies. They fear that as I go along with this part-time job, I would slowly loose interest with academic matters. They think that it could hinder me from pursuing my education, especially if I would start earning money. Both my mother and my father disagree, arguing that I would be better off if I just concentrated on my studies. I know they’re just concerned with my well-being, since they know how dedicated I am with my studies. The problem however, is that they don’t understand my reasons why I wanted the part-time job. I have many reasons why I wanted the part-time job. One would be the financial support that I could get from it. I wouldn’t have to rely to my parents for extra money when it comes to my personal expenses. It could also introduce me to an independent lifestyle, which I know would really come one way or another. Having this part-time job is not solely for the money, but also a good way to learn. It could be a very important experience for me, especially when it comes to my attitude towards work and my studies. Surely, it is important to prioritize my studies. However, it is also important to be introduced to the real world, wherein I’ll be able to learn how it is like to be handled by superiors, and develop a certain work attitude. The best way to moderate this conflict between me and my parents is through dialogue (Hamel, Doz, Prahalad, 1989). The key for them to accept my decision regarding the part-time job is for them to understand my reasons. It is best if I would be able to explain to them my point. This could be done by looking for the right situation to talk to them, and it would be best if I could talk to them separately, so that they’ll understand without bothering about the opinion of the other. During the dialogue, I should be able to clearly explain why it is ok for me to have this part-time job (Pfeffer, 1999). The approach that I think would best be accepted by them is how important it is to my future. An experience such as this would greatly help me to have a grasp of what lies ahead after my studies. This is the point which I think would connect my parents and the part-time job. Both my parents are concerned about my future that’s why they are wary about the decisions I make and take. If they would be able to see how this part-time job could positively affect me and my future, then I am sure that they would approve of it. The key is for them to fully understand it (Pfeffer, 1999). Moderating conflict is a case-to-case basis. The resolution of the conflict is dependent on the situation being faced (Wilmot Hocker, 2001). In this conflict which I have with my parents, the best approach is to have a dialogue with them and explain to the possible outcomes of the decisions I take. In this course I discovered I am a persistent student, an unfocused writer, and a planned reader who learned about my beliefs and goals through class readings and discussions. Over the course of this semester I’ve learned many things about myself as a student. I discovered that I am a persistent student because in spite of this course being challenging I maintained a positive course of action. For example, when I got my paper number two back I busted into tears called my mom and wanted to quit. But after I calmed down I told myself I wouldn’t give up and immediately begin the next paper. When I first started this course I was intimated by poetry in the general sense. I took English classes in high school and when we read poems in class I was always disengaged from the conversations. But, as the semester proceeded I became involved in class discussions and more confrontable analyzing poems. I discovered what feminism is and that I am a feminist because I believe women should be treated the same as men in society. The industrial revolution was not only technological revolution but a social one that would lie foundation that would grow the word â€Å"revolution† exponentially. The industrial revolution brought with it change, whether that change was positive or negative is questionable however it did change the world as it was known. In both England and the United States of America strong industrial revolutions struck, the revolutions would change roles in the household and society for both women and me and the ideologies held about gender roles. In both countries effected by the revolution, industrialization challenged religion and authority, the impact of which can still be seen today. The industrial revolution in both the United States and England relied heavily on roles in the household and society. Men, woman, children and minorities all had a set place in society before the industrial revolution. During the revolution and sense of enlightenment changed the roles of these individuals. In the middle of the 1800’s there was change in the role of men, the workplace was no longer a farm or working in the town, rather men were expected to be entrepreneurs. Men, unlike woman, were seen as aggressive and built to work in a savage work place were they could bring home the bread for the family.
